How do we evaluate Reef Health?
Reef Health Monitoring
HRHP developed the first comprehensive framework to define and evaluate key indicators of reef health assessed with well-defined grading criteria for the Mesoamerican Reef Region. This framework acknowledges the profound connections between reef health and human well-being, emphasizing how human activities impact the reef ecosystem and, in turn, how the state of the reef affects local communities and their livelihoods.
To broaden our reach and deepen our impact, with policy makers and the general public, we created the Reef Health Index, which is based on four critical reef health indicators combined into one easily trackable Index number. Every two years, we organize a collaborative and simultaneous monitoring effort with our dedicated partners, using standardized protocols to ensure consistent and accurate data collection. This coordinated approach not only provides valuable data and insights into the state of the reef but also fosters a sense of shared responsibility and commitment to preserving this vital ecosystem, all summarized in an easy to understand Report Card produced every 2 years.
